Joyful Noise

I love music.  It's deeply entwined in who I am.

On Sunday, I played my guitar again.  I haven't played it at all in the last 5 or 6 weeks.  I picked it up once a little more than a week before Sunday, and it hurt too much to play.

But on Sunday, I was able to play for a little while.  I could finger pick without any pain at all, and strumming was a little bit sore, but it wasn't painful!

My arm wore out pretty quickly, which was fine, because the fingers on my left hand were getting sore already.

I'm going to play a little bit every night now.  I'll bet it's actually good/therapeutic for my elbow because it's not load bearing, it doesn't flex my wrist, and it's decent exercise for a stiff joint.

But I was able to play music!  I missed that SO much!

No Wonder I Hurt

Today I got to see the "Operative Report" from my Orthopaedic Surgeon.  Here's what it said:

Date of Service:  8/12/2009

PREOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS:  Right elbow chronic lateral epicondylitis.

POSTOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS:  Right elbow chronic lateral epicondylitis.

PROCEDURE PERFORMED:  Right elbow extensor tendon aponeurosis debridement -- repair.

SURGEON:  <Surgeon's Name>

ASSISTANT:  <Assistant's Name>

ANESTHESIA:  General.

COMPLICATIONS:  None.

DRAINS:  None.

OPERATIVE NOTE:  The patient was taken to the operating room.  After induction of general anesthesia, the patient's right arm was prepped and draped in sterile manner.  The right arm was elevated, exsanguinated, and tourniquet inflated to 250 mmHg.

An incision was made over the lateral epicondyle.  Sharp disseciton was carried through skin and subcutaneous tissue.  Extensor carpi radialis longus was divided and, beneath that, there was degenerative torn extensor carpi radialis brevis which was debrided back to healthy tissue.  The lateral epicondyle was lightly debrided, and several small drill holes were placed.  The tendon was then reapproximated and sewn with 2-0 figure-of-eight Vicryl sutures.  The skin was closed with 3-0 Monocryl subcutaneous sutures and Steri-Strips.  Marcaine 0.5% was injected in the wound.  A sterile compression dressing with sugar-tong splint was applied.  The patient was taken to the recovery room in stable condition.

So that's what happened.  It's nice to see again that "there was degenerative torn extensor carpi radialis brevis,"  meaning that yes, the tendon WAS torn, and that this wouldn't have gotten better by itself.  No, not good that I had to have the surgery, but it IS good that the surgery discovered exactly what was expected and the surgery wasn't for nothing.

Interesting to me was that my right arm was "exsanguinated."  This means that they used a very tight compression wrap to force as much blood as possible out of my arm.  Then the tourniquet kept as much blood as possible from returning to my arm.  Doing this results in a nearly bloodless operation.

"Several small drill holes were placed."  It's no wonder that I'm still aching.  It's no wonder that there's still a tiny bit of swelling.  One of the extensor tendons was split and the other was basically scraped until all of the "degenerative" tissue was gone.  It's no wonder that the tendons are still tight and hurt when I stretch them.

Actually, it's amazing that I'm doing as well as I am at this point.  I'm just over 4 weeks post-surgery and I feel like I'm making good progress.  I still get frustrated now and again.  I still get tired of the pain.  But all things considered, I'm doing very well.

Are You Ready For Some Football?

· by Mr. Me · General · 2 comments

I certainly am!  The withdrawal symptoms that started setting in in January are starting to abate, because this opening weekend of College Football, I watched...

  • Oregon at Boise State - Yes, I saw the punch and followed the controversy.
  • Navy at Ohio State - A lot of Buckeyes were biting their nails until the 2-point conversion attempt.
  • Nevada at Notre Dame
  • BYU at Oklahoma - WOW!  Things might have ended differently if Sam Bradford hadn't been injured.  Regardless, BYU was hanging in there even WITH Bradford in the game.
  • LSU at Washington - Looks like Sarkisian's Huskies are going to do okay this year.  They played LSU respectably.
  • Miami at Florida State - A knock-down, drag-out back-and-forth game from start to finish.

I think I watched all or part of a couple more games too, but these were the fun ones for me.  I would have watched the Gators play had it been televised in my area, but there's not much I can do about that.

Aaaah...  Another season of College Football is upon us!

Progress

· by Mr. Me · General · 1 comment

Tendons heal slowly and painfully.  Every day, I make a tiny bit of progress as I extend my elbow just a little bit farther and it becomes just a little bit easier.  Each stretch is painful, and I still have funny bumps on my elbow from the surgery, but those are still continuing to recede day by day, little by little.

Each day brings new milestones of things I can do again without pain.  Once I had the splint off of my arm, it was a lot easier to do things like get dressed and type and feed myself.  Lately, it's becoming easier to wash my hair and brush my teeth--things that I just did without even thinking about them in the past.   Today, I was able to comb my hair with my right hand without any pain.  There was stiffness in my elbow, but no pain.

Hooray for being able to take pride in the small things again!  Hooray for tiny bits of progress, even if the progress is painful at times!  Hooray for baby steps towards getting back to normal!

Moving Day

· by Mr. Me · Work · 3 comments

I moved to a new cubicle today.  The move wasn't supposed to be until Friday, but since the cubicles we're moving to are ready, I decided to get it over with.

Another team is expanding and they wanted to keep them all in the same location, so we got booted out.  I spent three years in the same cubicle.   I quite liked that cubicle.  I had a window.

When I first heard about a potential move, I told my manager that I still would like to have natural light in my cubicle if possible, not fully expecting that I would get it, but at least I would make my wishes known.

Today, I moved in, and I'm quite happy, really.  The new cubicle has even more light than the old one!  I have two large windows behind my monitors.  I'm in a quieter corner of the building now, so it will be a better work environment...except in the summer when I'm going to be gazing longingly out my window...

Freedom!

I went back to the Orthpaedic surgeon this morning for my first post-surgical follow-up.  The nurse cut through layer after layer of surgical packing after removing the brace.  Eventually, she got all the way down to my arm.

It's kind of yucky, to tell the truth.  It's wrinkly and smelly and stubbly where they shaved it and the incisions are ugly.  But though it's not a pretty sight, it's free of that brace!

The surgeon looked it over and pushed and poked some spots and quickly checked my range of motion (or lack thereof) and seemed pleased.  He wants to see me in six weeks.  In the meantime, they gave me a wrist brace to wear.  Yes, that's it.  Just a wrist brace.

I'm supposed to take it off 3 or 4 times a day and do stretches.  Thus begins the next painful phase of my recovery.  I can't straighten my elbow all the way yet.  I can't bend it all the way yet either.  But my elbow should gain back all of its range of motion rather quickly.

It's my wrist that is going to be the slow-going part of the recovery.  I'll start with stretching and very light exercise, and eventually use one-pound weights and the like.  In six weeks, I'll talk with the surgeon again about physical therapy.

But I feel SO free, not having that big, bulky brace on my arm any more.  I am typing this with TWO hands!  Sure, one of them doesn't work perfectly at the moment, but it's certainly a TON faster than typing with only one hand!

So here's to the next phase of my recovery--one that is already closer to "normal" than I thought I would be for quite a while.

Annoying!

· by Mr. Me · General · 1 comment

Fortunately, I've moved past the first painful stage of my recovery.  The pain has diminished to a dull ache that is well-managed with ibuprofen.  I'm glad that I'm no longer needing the pain pills that were prescribed for me.

Now I'm in the middle of an extreme annoyance phase.

Next time you get dressed, don't use your dominant hand at all.  Next time you use the restroom at work, don't use your dominant hand at all.  Next time you type an email, eat your lunch, prepare your dinner, brush your teeth, take a shower, fill out a credit card receipt, hug your loved ones, or drive your car, don't use your dominant arm at all.  It doesn't seem so hard until you actually try it.  It's annoying, but it has helped me appreciate how well two hands work together.  It has also helped me take pride in seemingly small accomplishments.

Other annoying things:

  • Cramping in my hand and wrist because they've been completely immobilized--Hands like to move!
  • Itching where I can't scratch
  • Sleeping poorly because every time I try to roll over, the brace either gets in the way or my arm starts to ache because it's not in one of the exactly two possible comfortable positions that exist for me right now
  • Twitching in the muscles attached to the repaired tendon--OUCH!
  • Not having a good story for why I'm in a splint--It's freaking TENNIS ELBOW!  How mundane!
  • Having everything take four times as long for me to do even though my mind is still going full speed, causing life to be in constant slow motion
  • Smelly hand smells coming from the hand I can't wash very well--thank heavens for hand sanitizer!

So I'm constantly tired, achy, smelly, and annoyed.  I'm not the most fun person to be around these days, and I don't like that either!

So I'm counting down the slow-motion days until my follow-up appointment when they remove this "Do not open:  No user-serviceable parts inside" brace from my arm and put a new brace on that, will likely be equally uncomfortable and highly annoying.  But I'll be able to remove it once in a while and at least I can remove some of the "smelly" from the list of my current undesirable traits.

Seven days and counting...  in...... sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow......... mooooooooooooootion...........................

Ouch! That HURTS!!

· by Mr. Me · General · 3 comments

The surgery went well, according to my doctor.  I woke up with my right arm immobilized from my wrist to above my elbow.  Moving my wrist right now would be exceedingly painful.

The worst pain I've experienced so far happened during the night last night.  I had one of those "falling" dreams and I moved my arm when I startled awake.

I re-learned that I don't do well with percocet.  The pain was a bit much for Lortab so I took Percocet a couple of times.  Even though I took anti-nausea medication with the Percocet, I had a very nauseated morning.  Fortunately the pain has backed off.  I've only had to take 1 Lortab in the last 12 hours.

The arm brace is annoying.  I get itchy spots in there and I can't do anything about it.  Ugh.

So tell me...  WHY did I do this?

Anna

Ja of nee?"

"Goed.  Bent u genegen tot een tweede huwelijk?"

"Met wie?"  vroeg Anna.

"Met mij."

Hiermede waren zij getrouwd.

Zij was dood.

And Away We Go!

· by Mr. Me · General · 3 comments

I think I'm ready.  I tried to think of everything I needed to do at home and at work that would better be done with two hands.  I think I've done most of it.

I...

  • Hung a picture
  • Finished supporting some pipes with pipe strap
  • Pruned the redbud tree
  • Trimmed and mowed the lawn
  • Upgraded five blogs
  • Made the most delicious grilled guacamole bacon swiss burgers for dinner
  • Grilled some chicken for a dinner later in the week.
  • Played a few video games

I'm sure there was more, but that's all that came to mind at the moment.

If it appears that I'm taking a break from my blog for a while, it's likely only because it's going to take me a lot LOT longer to type things for a while.  I don't really know exactly what to expect as far as recovery goes, but I'm pretty certain that the next four to six months will be painful at times, frustrating at times, and painful AND frustrating some of the time.

So goodbye for now.  Wish me luck.
