First Campout

· by Mr. Me · Scouting · 5 comments

Last weekend was my first campout as Scoutmaster.  We went to the Little Sahara recreation area.

My feet are STILL cold.

It got down below freezing during the night.  One of the scouts had nothing for his feet but flip flops.  Smart.

We cooked and ate breakfast in blowing snow.

But the general concensus was that we had a great time!  Yes, it was a lot of fun.  I learned a bunch of things that will make the next campout go more smoothly.  But we all survivied (even the one with flip flops).

The next one will be even colder...  It's the "Klondike Derby" in January.  *shiver*

And maybe this is why I'm glad I was never a scout.

I helped out in a dunking booth one April for an hour or so. It was literally days before I was well and truly warm again. It was a cold from the inside, so wearing sweaters and socks and wrapping up in blankets didn't make it go away. But I did get warm again.

I'll think warm thoughts for your feet.

Maybe another lesson to take would be to specifically tell the boys what to pack and what would be highly inappropriate. I hope that boy doesn't bring flip-flops in January.

One of the boys put together a rather good list of things to bring/pack for this particular trip. We emphasized that it was going to be very cold. This particular young man's mother told me that she can't get him to wear anything else on his feet. So... No, not my fault. :) (She did mention that he WILL wear ski boots while skiing.)

Fortunately, said person won't be along on the Klondike, so I won't have to worry about him.

You know, if that kid lost a toe to frost bite, I'm sure he'd rethink his footwear. Tell him if he's not prepared for the cold, (aren't scouts always prepared?) then he should be prepared to lose some little piggies. :)

Brrrr! SO glad it's you and not me. ;)

Wow... if a campout in a place called "Little Sahara" was cold...

I shall light a candle for you in January.
